Laveta V. (Echols) Mills

A graveside service for Laveta V. (Echols) Mills, age 92, of Houma, Louisiana will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, February 13, 2025 at Mallard Cemetery in Montague. Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 PM on Wednesday, February 12, 2025 at Scott Funeral Home in Saint Jo. She passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 6, 2025. Laveta was born in Oglesby, Texas on March 19, 1932 to D.D “Debbs” and Effie Mae (Taylor) Echols. Laveta was active in the Church of Christ in Burkburnett, Texas for forty-two years. She resided there until she was physically unable. Laveta moved to Houma, Louisiana in 2016 to be cared for by her children. Laveta enjoyed many Marti Gras parades in Houma. In her early years, she worked as a seamstress until she married and became a homemaker and mother. She was an avid reader looking forward to her trips to the library. Laveta married Bill Black in 1950. The marriage ended but she was blessed with a son from this union. Laveta married her second husband, Raymond Mills, in 1959. This marriage lasted fifty-seven years until his death in 2016. They were blessed with three more children. Laveta is survived by her children: Deward Wilton and wife Anne Black of Racine, Wisconsin, Mary Ellis of Conroe, Texas, Harry Earl and wife Phi Mills of Houma, Louisiana, and Lisa Rene Gholston of Houma, Louisiana; grandchildren: Laurie Hulsey of Racine, Wisconsin, Julie and husband Mike Clune of Louisburg, Tennessee, David and wife Krystal Ellis of Roanoke, Texas, Daniel and wife Ashley Ellis of Conroe, Texas, Tiffany Gholston-Thompkins of Olathe, Kansas, Amy and husband Anthony Marshall of Olathe, Kansas, Eric and wife Jenna Gholston of Las Vegas, Nevada; fourteen great grandchildren; three great step grandchildren; three great great stepchildren; brother: Elvin and wife Elaine Echols; sister-in-law: Pearl Echols; and numerous extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband: Raymond Mills; parents: Debbs and Effie Echols; first husband: Bill Black; siblings: Jimmie Echols, Harvey Echols, Hazel Greenwood, Joyce Leeper, Carole Beckner, Sandra Whaley, and twin infant brothers Howard and Tommy Echols; son-in-law: David Lee Ellis; and niece: Darlene Greenwood Harrell.
