Richard George Cowan

Mass of Christian Burial for Richard George "Dick" Cowan, age 86, of Muenster will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, March 8, 2025 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial to follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery. Rosary and Vigil will be held at 6:00 PM on Friday, March 7, 2025 at Scott Funeral Home in Muenster. Dick passed away peacefully on February 27, 2025 surrounded by his loving family. Born on March 10, 1938, in lowa City, lowa, Dick was the son of George and Vivian Boyd. He was later adopted by his stepfather, Charles Cowan. The family moved to Kansas City, Missouri, where Dick attended Center High School, graduating in 1955. In February 1956, Dick enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served honorably as a hospital corpsman until March 1959. In 1969, Dick met the love of his life, Charlene Hellman. The two were married on August 16, 1969, and they began a beautiful life together. A year later, they welcomed their son, Charley, followed by daughters Katie and Wendy. The family eventually settled in Hurst, Texas, where they became active parishioners at Saint John Catholic Church, where their children also attended school. Dick always made an effort to be present at his children's sporting events, and later, his granddaughters' events as well, always showing his love and support. Dick enjoyed his work at Lockheed Martin, where he worked from 1985 until his retirement in 2005. After retiring, Dick and Charlene moved to the Hellman family farm in Muenster, where they embraced the slower pace of country life. Dick found joy in golfing, playing dominos, and socializing with friends at the Muenster Fit Center. A man of great character, Dick was known for his strong work ethic, his passion for life, and his deep devotion to his family. He loved his family deeply and was proud to see his children and grandchildren thrive. His laughter, wisdom, and kindness touched all who knew him. Dick is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Charlene Cowan, of Muenster; son Charley Cowan of Keller; daughters Katie Cowan of Arlington and Wendy Taylor of Muenster; granddaughter Ashley Koepke and her husband, Staff Sergeant Michael Koepke, of Fort Campbell; grandson William Cowan of Keller; great-grandson Luke Eickmann of Fort Campbell; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. He is also survived by his sister, Suzanne Malone, and her children, Jay, Sarah, and Spencer, of Hurst; and his brother Danny Cowan and his wife, Margaret, and their children Bill, Peter, and Petrina of Albury, New South Wales, Australia. Dick was preceded in death by his uncles, Paul Adrian and Clayton Cowan, his parents, Charles and Vivian Cowan, and his great-nephew Remi Malone, as well as his great-niece Courtney Malone. The family would like to extend special thanks to Kathy Kyle and the local Hearts staff, Angels Home Health, Heart to Heart Hospice and Renaissance Nursing Home for their loving care and support. Dick's legacy of love, laughter, and unwavering dedication to his family and friends will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be deeply missed, but his memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
